Electronic cigarettes have caused quite a debate since their invention almost a decade ago. A number of organizations (especially anti-smoking groups) are trying to have them completely banned from general sale. But a new study conducted in Italy may change all that. According to the New York Times, an Italian experiment shows that electronic cigarettes can indeed help people stop smoking. The study was conducted by Riccardo Polosa from the University of Catania.
For this study, Polosa hired 40 heavy smokers for six months. During those six months, the smokers used e-cigarettes on a regular basis. Once the study had been completed, the findings were very positive. It showed that e-cigarettes helped those who participated cut their cigarette consumption by 50 percent or more. Of the 40 smokers, 10 were able to quit smoking with e-cigarettes, a hit rate of 25%, close to the 30% claimed by creators of this product and way above any other quit smoking solution.
Despite this proof, some organizations still want to ban the device. This is probably more of a financial issue than a health issue. Included among the organizations that want to ban e-cigarettes are the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
With new evidence showing that e-cigs can help people stop smoking, you have to wonder why organizations want to ban them. As stated before, it’s probably all about money. If the FDA and other organizations cared so much about the health of people, they would completely ban traditional cigarettes which are known to be the leading cause of preventable deaths every year worldwide.
It has also been proven that e-cigarettes contain a fraction of the harmful chemicals found in real cigarettes. Again, why are the FDA and other organizations so unwilling to give them a shot? All evidence points to financial imperatives. Though it was just a small study, it still showed that electronic cigarettes can help people stop smoking without any shadow of a doubt.
Some say that e-cigarettes could turn out to be one of the most effective smoking cessation options out there. If the FDA stepped up and performed proper testing on them, a lot of lives could potentially be saved. As cigarette consumption became greatly reduced thanks to e-cigarettes, there is no doubt that conditions such as strokes and heart attacks would go down as well.
When you think about it, e-cigarettes could not only save lives, they could also help with the financial crisis going on in the health industry as hospitals and clinics would not be overstretched with record numbers of new patients. Yet another tremendous benefit of e-cigarettes is that they can result in weight loss.
